Passport Renewal in Israel

We haven’t been to Israel in over 20 year and our Israeli passports have expired. We’ve been told by the Israeli Consulate in Toronto that the only way to renew the passports would be to do so in Israel. We are planning to go there in October 2016 for the holidays. With the holidays we will not have the required 10 working days needed to issue the passports. We do not wish to pay close to $400.00 Canadian per person to get the passports at the airport. What should we do? Is renouncing the Israeli citizenship the only way out?
